Writing:
These are all books, bar the first one. Most should be available on Amazon.
www.Personalitypage.com – Great resource with information on Jung’s 16 personality archetypes. Pay the measly five dollars and do the on-line survey to find out which profile you belong to, then read it and be amazed. I find this a great way of finding the sore spots in my character’s personalities. In particular, pay attention to the Personal Growth section, particularly the Potential Problem areas. These will give you some great places to find conflict for your characters.
Writing for Dough by Bill Idelson. One of the most helpful, common sense books about character and story structure I’ve ever read. Aimed at television writers, but the message is the same for any genre.
The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler. Examines the mono-hero myth in literature and breaks down classic story structure. Very readable and understandable, with great examples from Star Wars and other classic movies. Another great tool to build story skill.
The Art of Romance Writing by Valerie Parv. A great handbook for aspiring writers. Includes simple explanations and guides, and a great character checklist. Recently updated, I believe, so it’s probably even better than the version I have.
The Complete Writer’s Guide to Heroes & Heroines:
Sixteen Master Archetypes by Tami D. Cowden, Caro LaFever, Sue Viders. A guide to archetypal characters, a great place to start building your unique characters.
